Potty-Training Chart: “Cars” Theme & Free Printable!

My little boy announced to me the other day that he wants a Lightning McQueen sticker chart, to go with his Lightning McQueen potty seat, fruit snacks and stickers.  So, I decided to ratchet up my Excel skills, and crank* out this puppy for him:

Not too bad, if I say so myself.  (In case you’re wondering, he does approve.)  Admittedly we’ve kinda fallen off the potty-training wagon over the last several weeks, so while we all have the capability and know-how, we all are, erm, lacking the motivation.  Hopefully a spiffy new chart will help nip that in the bud.

A few ideas for how to use this:

  • Print it out one at a time and use stickers, or print it once and laminate it, then use a dry-erase crayon or colored masking tape.
  • Put one sticker on/fill in one box for every potty-ing attempt (that’s what we do); fill in one box for each step in the potty routine performed; or fill in one box for each successful deposit.
  • Treats = candy, a story, TV time… doesn’t really matter what it is, as long as it speaks to YOUR child, and motivates them to keep doing his business in the bathroom the way you want him to!

*Note: In the name of full disclosure, it took me a couple hours to figure out how to do everything/design the layout, choose complementary colors, find the pictures, and generate the sample image there.  So no, I didn’t just “whip” it out in the traditional sense.

    • Aw shucks, thanks! Yeah, we’re still in the middle of it all. We keep figuring it out, then something happens and we fall off the wagon. But luckily stickers and treats keep us all motivated (him to do it, and me to keep reminding him because instead of whining, he gets excited) so that’s what helps get us back on track. What did you end up doing to make it stick?

      • With all of the children there simply came a point where the concept clicked, I used thin mints cut into quarters and put in a plastic bag as a reward. With the last one there was also a bag of M&M’s so that every child in the house was rewarded when the baby went to the potty, that made it so I didn’t have to remember as much 😉 With all of them though I did set the timer for about 45 minutes and we went there every time it went off and sat for a couple seconds while I lectured on how it feels to go potty and what the benefits are of being potty trained. (I’m honestly that boring)

  1. Thank you for visiting my site! I snatched up your potty chart – my 2YO is on the brink of potty training and he adores Lightening McQueen. I’m hoping that your great chart will keep us both motivated 🙂

  3. Thank you so much for creating this chart. My twin boys love it, and seem to really be getting potty training. Positive reinforcement is the way to go!

  4. I totally agree! I’m a huge fan of teaching through encouragement and positive experiences. I find it to be much more effective, and the effect is much longer-lasting than teaching through fear of punishment. I’m glad the chart is helping you! I’m always looking for new ideas for charts, so if there’s anything else you might find helpful, let me know and I’ll whip one out!

  5. Attractive component of content. I simply stumbled upon your website and in accession capital to claim that I
acquire in fact enjoyed account your blog posts.
Anyway I will be subscribing for your feeds and even I success you get admission to persistently rapidly.

  6. Hi there would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m going to start my own blog soon but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique.

P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

  7. Thank you for your lovely chart we are trying it since my son has regressed. He was toilet trained for three months and wears cotton underwear but for some reason no idea why he has regressed. He says only go in diapers and pee goes on the carpet. It’s very frustrating when he was telling us consistently and no accidents. He is still dry at night though but many accidents on the carpet or while outside. We have never used pull ups and went straight to underwear and he was toilet trained in three days just was so easy now he rebells and don’t care to go in the toilet. We are trying to retrain him but it’s difficult now he knows how it all goes! Can you give any advice? I never get upset with him and remind him often and even try and take him ever hour to an hour and a half.

    • Thanks for stopping by Katherine! The best thing that I can think to tell you is to just keep at it with him, and try not to get discouraged. Something similar has happened with both my older kids, and I never really understood why either. It might be that there is some major change or other life disruption happening, like a move or an illness; he may be exerting his will/demonstrating his ability to make his own choices by acting out and refusing to cooperate, even though he’s mastered the skill; or he may simply not be mentally or emotionally ready to manage the responsibility yet. Whatever the reason, it’s unlikely that it’s related to anything you’re doing, or that you’re doing something wrong and causing his regression. Potty training is a process and a milestone that occurs naturally, and often not all at once. Keep at it though – you’ll both get there! Let me know when you guys master it, and what, if anything, you did to help him get there – I’d love to hear about it!

      • Hi there Diana,
Your chart worked wonders for us he really enjoyed putting the stickers on and getting a reward at the end. He regressed for about two weeks. We sat down with him and asked him if he was scared of the toilet or why he wouldn’t go on the toilet anymore and he flat out said he can hold it that he was holding it. Which told me that he was practicing holding it and then when he couldn’t hold it anymore he was going where ever he was. He however has always been great with poop and even during the regression would tell us when he need to poop and would sit on the toilet. We continued to remind him that if he needed to go that he should stop and go to the bathroom to use the toilet. When he felt his body was telling him he probably needed to go. I don’t know what clicked for him again but as I said within two weeks he was fine again. We still say he to try before going in the car or outside to play and when we see he is crossing legs are pee pee dance we ask him if he needs to go.
We went on holiday to visit my family and we had to go by plane he was fine told us every time, sometimes more than he actually needed to go ( he likes to flush and wash his hand.) Accidents are very, very rare now and we are back on track.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to me.

        P. S, and while on holiday he learnt to pee standing up which he loves to do now!

  8. Well here I am again! My 3.5 year old is regressing with the toilet again and he was totally trained! He couldn’t answer why he was having accidents again cause sometimes he still does tell us. He said a sticker chart might help him remember. So I am going to print it out and try this again. We will see. It’s so frustrating!

  9. Your toddler will find this team sport much more interesting than going it
alone. remember queing at the bank and watching parents with boys exasperated,.
If you see your dog turning in circles or sniffing the
ground take them to their potty area and repeat the
command you have chosen, if they use the potty area, praise, praise, and more praise.

  10. If you choose to correct them then they will think they are
getting in trouble for doing whatever it is that they are
doing at that point in time. remember queing at the bank and watching parents with boys exasperated,.
Read on to find out why delay can occur and what to
    do in such cases.
